Do you perhaps have a few questions concerning wood floor sanding and finishing in E18 South Woodford? It would be strange if you didn’t! We’re always being bombarded with them from all sides, so here are a few of the more common ones, and if you have any others please call us and we’ll help answer them for you.
HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT MY ROOM TO BE OUT OF ACTION?
For a normal-sized room of about 12 feet by 10 feet, such as a living room or a kitchen, the sanding and finishing process will take about two days. The finish, such as wax or varnish, will then have to be left alone for another day or two so it can cure properly. If extensive repairs are needed, you may have to allow a little more time to get the floor ready for sanding down, but all this will be explained during your free on-site assessment.
DO I NEED TO HAVE THE GAPS FILLED ?
Although it’s up to you, we always strongly recommend that you have the gaps filled in. This is to stop draughts developing, especially in rooms on the ground floor, between the flooring and exterior wall airbricks. Filling in gaps in places like kitchens and bathrooms is also necessary as additional protection against spillage.
We do not use general purpose wood fillers such as the ones you can find in the high
street. These will crumble and fall into the gaps to the sub-floor spaces, and they
can eveneasily be sucked up by vacuum cleaners. Our resin and silicon based fillers
will create a proper seal for the floor and will be sanded down to a smooth finish
along with the timbers before the stain, oil or other effect is applied.
CAN ANYTHING BE DONE WITH MY FLOOR OR SHOULD I PUT A NEW ONE DOWN?
In most cases, when you first remove the carpet you won’t be pleasantly surprised by what you see underneath! The bare floorboards will in most cases look a real mess, covered in grime and filth, dried paint stains and squashed spiders most likely, and as grey and colourless as an old kitchen rag. But don’t despair! This is perfectly normal and what we usually find is that it is precisely this dirt and paint that is protecting the fresh underlying wood.
We use the latest sanding machines, designed to limit dust production and finely adjustable, to strip away just the right amount of surface dirt and grime to expose your fresh wood. This will then be all ready for application of a suitable finish, which will see the floor spring back to healthy life again.
WE HAVE ASTHMA SUFFERERS IN THE HOUSE - WHAT ABOUT THEM?
If you or someone else in your household suffers from asthma or another allergic condition, the great news is that bare floorboards will be a godsend for them. This is because the tiny dust mites that live in fitted carpets and other soft furnishings and feed on human skin cause most such reactions. When you remove the carpets their habitat goes as well and they have to move out. Evicting your dust mites will help to remove part of the problem. Think instead about using colourful rugs, which you can clean and dry as often as you like.
WILL MY NEW FLOOR LAST FOREVER?
Nothing, unfortunately, lasts forever. It’s the way of the world, but you can certainly expect your newly sanded and finished wooden floor to last anything between three and 10 years before it needs any further attention. A floor in a low traffic area such as a suburban property with two adult residents who look after it properly will last at least a decade as it is. On the other hand, a busy family kitchen with kids and pets tramping on it every day will need to be buffed and polished every couple of years to stay looking good.
WILL THERE BE MUCH MESS?
Our dust-free sanding machines keep the mess to an absolute minimum and as we work we seal off other rooms in the property. Before we leave we thoroughly tidy up, so there will be no mess at all for you to concern yourself with.
